I’m reading Glass Menagerie 2E PA

Music, parades, costumes, beads and tons of fun of course! All of these things mixed together are what make Mardi Gras so exciting! There are plenty of ways to go about celebrating Mardi Gras, whether you are in New Orleans or just hanging out in your dorm room. Make the most of it!

If you plan on traveling to New Orleans, there are many ways to get yourself into some trouble (good trouble that is). But before I share the secrets of having fun at Mardi Gras, here are a few helpful tips that you should really consider!

  1. Make your hotel reservation early! (Hopefully this one is already taken care of…)
  2. All the streets close down for Mardi Gras, so make sure you figure out how you are going to get around once you are down there. If you are staying in an urban hotel, taxicabs are hard to come by and public transportation is very rarely in use during Mardi Gras, I suggest getting a map (so you don’t get lost) and walking! If you are coming from a suburban hotel, leave early, there are off-site commercial parking lots but they fill up fast!
  3. If you plan on watching the parades, (which I highly suggest) GET THERE EARLY! The streets fill up quickly and you are going to want to be able to see the floats!
  4. I know you are there to have fun and get crazy. But respect the police, because they WILL arrest you.
  5. Hide your valuables or just don’t take them! Things get stolen very easily in big crowds, and especially if you are going to be having a good time.
  6. If you want to go out to dinner, I’d make a reservation now. Otherwise, you will have to deal with the street vendor food (which can be good too!)
  7. The most important one of all, no glass containers! Make sure and have cans or plastic cups!

Now for the fun stuff! If you plan on having the best time of your life in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Hit up the French Quarter, families have been warned not take their kids there, which means it’s going to be crazy!! This is where all of the risqué behavior is allowed, and I know that’s where you’re going to want to be! But do not take this behavior into the family areas, because like I said, the police will arrest you.
  2. Dress up! Wear a mask, or beads, or paint your face! That’s the best part of Mardi Gras. (not to mention getting to look at everyone else’s costumes)
  3. Last but not least, GET WILD! That’s what Mardi Gras is all about!

If you aren’t going to New Orleans this year for Mardi Gras, don’t worry! You can still get beads, have fun, and make it a good time. So get together with your friends, get a costume, and get crazy! Make this a Mardi Gras to remember (or not)!

I’m reading Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation

Reading has sort of become a lost cause. Nowadays everyone would rather go see a movie or watch television. Most of the time people think it’s silly or “nerdy” to read books. But in reality, the books people ignore have been turned into movies, movies that are selected for many awards. Actually, a lot of the movies that are nominated for the Academy Awards this year, from Best Picture to Sound Editing, were actually books first! Here are all the books to movies that have been nominated for awards (some of them have different titles, so in that case I put both):

The fact that these books were good enough to be turned into movies AND nominated for the Academy Awards says a lot. I’m certain you have seen one of these movies, if not all. And since they have been nominated for an award, they had to have been good movies, right? So if you have seen the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it, why not pick up the book that inspired it!

Now, when you finish reading the books that are already movies, you’re probably going to wonder what to do next. Well, that’s where I can help! Every year there are tons of books to movies and I have a list of some for 2012, just for you. This year it’s time to be a step ahead and pick up the book before you see the movie!

I’m reading Biology

Chances are you have probably failed a test, quiz or exam at one point or another. If you haven’t, bravo, but if you have then you understand the feeling of anxiety and panic thinking that there is no way you can overcome such a huge blow to your grade. However, there is a way that you can make up for those points and possibly avoid receiving an F in the future.

  1. Staying on top of your homework in the beginning of the semester/quarter will alleviate future problems. There is a reason for homework, although some people call it busy work. Homework is designed for you to refresh your memory about what you learned in class that day, and to bring back any questions you may have about your assignment. Homework to a student is what exercise is to an athlete – they go hand-in-hand. In order for an athlete to grow, he or she has to exercise and practice. In the same, we have homework and assignments so that we are practicing the material before an exam is given. Nothing feels worse than getting an exam where you are unsure about over 50 percent of the questions.
  2. Reach out for help from your professors. They’re not scary people who will look down upon you for letting them know that you don’t understand the course material. If you fail an exam, go to your professor and ask them about the reason you received low marks on some of your questions. Ask them what you can do next time to improve, and let them know that you’re struggling. Keeping quiet and hiding in the back of the classroom doesn’t prove to the professor that you actually care about your grade. Faculty members more than likely will not approach their students, so it’s wise to show them that you care by letting them know you’re having difficulties understanding what their teaching.
  3. Be honest about the decisions you are making. This point is for the people who blame everyone else but themselves for failing their exam. Simply put: if you choose to go out and party knowing you have an exam at 8 a.m., then that’s your prerogative. However, if you fail that exam the next day or miss taking the test, then that’s your fault. It’s your responsibility to make choices based upon priorities that you have and the impression you want to make. Professors are very keen on knowing the students who legitimately try to learn the course material versus the ones who are just taking a class because they’re required to do so.
  4. Never give up on yourself. Failing an exam is rough, and makes you feel like all of the studying in the world isn’t good enough. In fact, a lot of students will give up on themselves after receiving an F because they feel like they will never learn the course material. However, beating yourself up for something that you didn’t fully understand is not going to solve the problem or make you ready for the next exam. Take the time to find out what the problems were so that you can fix them and be prepared for your next test. By pushing forward you will find that it isn’t the end of the world and that you can succeed after failing an exam.
